Book A Tour

You name it, he’s probably done it. Don May has enjoyed an interesting work history spanning 40 plus years that has included working for Ontario Hydro, construction, hotel management and forestry. Today, the Toronto-born native is enjoying retirement in style at Caressant Care Fergus Retirement Home where he has lived for the past four years.

“They treat me well here,” he says.

After finishing high school, Don and his family moved to a 5-acre home in the country just south of Guelph. It was here that at age 16 he began his working career ay Ontario Hydro, now known as Hydro One.

“I lied about my age to get a job,” Don recalls. “I worked for Ontario Hydro for about 13 years. We cleared the lines of trees and did tree trimming around the power lines. It was hard work but I really enjoyed it.”

Circumstances forced Don to leave the job he loved and he fell into the hotel management business. He managed a number of hotels for 20 years including Tillsonburg where he lived for 40 years.

“It was tough work, though,” he notes. “You had to work long hours including some holidays.”

In addition to Tillsonburg, Don managed hotels in Guelph and Stratford.

The toll of hotel management became too much and Don decided to try his hand in construction doing drywall. Then he landed a job in the Town of Tillsonburg as foreman of the parks department that included doing forestry work such as tree removal, working on flower beds and in the local arena. Don had come full circle.

He retired from the Town at age 65 where he had worked for 12 years.

He enjoys time with his three children and grandchildren who visit him at the home.

He has some words of wisdom to young people pondering their future.

“Stay in school as long as you can. If you find something you like doing – stay with it.”
