Located in Arthur, Ontario, the Nursing Home has 84 beds. The preferred candidate must be a Registered Nurse with a Current Certificate of Competence. ACTIVITY AIDE      Part Time

JOB SUMMARY:

The Activity Aide assists the Activity Coordinator in the provision of meaningful activities to meet the assessed physical, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents.
 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Participates in the assessment and re-assessment of activity needs of the residents based on their interests and capabilities in order to maintain and develop suitable programming for the residents.

2. Facilities activity programs under the direction of the Activity Coordinator.  Assists in planning of programs of sufficient variety to meet residents needs.

3. Assists in the provision of opportunities for recreation, work, education, religious functions, self-maintenance and social and interpersonal relationships.

4. Assists the Activity Coordinator in Volunteer related functions.

5. Assists the Activity Coordinator in the care of equipment and supplies.

6. Maintains effective communication with the Activity Coordinator, the Administrator and other members of the Health Care team.

7. Assists the Activity Coordinator in the preparation of department records and reports

8. Participates in In-Service education programs, to develop necessary skills in order to fulfill departmental goals and objectives, as well as personal development. 

9. Assists the Activity Co-ordinator in the development and maintenance of good rapport with community agencies, resources and other Nursing Homes as well as the general public.

10. Recognizes safety hazards and the importance of providing a safe environment by following established policies and procedures, and reporting hazardous situations.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Knowledge and skill in a variety of recreational activities (e.g. dance, music, exercises, crafts).

2. Organizational and leadership skills.

3. Excellent interpersonal skills.

4. Familiarity with the aging process and result.

5. Excellent communication skills (oral and written).

6. Familiar with regulations pertaining to WHMIS and able to successfully complete the WHMIS test annually.

      The Registered Practical Nurse, in the Nursing Home, shall focus on the delivery of health care in a safe environment for all the Residents.  Professional nursing care shall be provided, in accordance with the Ontario College of Nurses, and the facility guidelines, policies and procedures.  As a member of the Care Team, the Registered Practical Nurse, will also be responsible for completing assigned duties in support services for the Residents, e.g. laundry, meal service.
    PRIMARY DUTIES:
  • Assessment of Residents’ conditions, implementation of appropriate interventions and on-going evaluation of outcomes.
  • Complete documentation per guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Communicates to Registered Nurses and appropriate staff, changes in Residents’ conditions.
  • Provides necessary health teaching to Residents on an on-going basis.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Supervises and administers the entire nursing service including, but not limited to nursing personnel, orientation and education, drug management, clinical nursing techniques, nursing records, nursing supplies and co-ordination of nursing with other disciplines.  Also responsible for maintaining quality care and conforming to physicians orders and nursing home and governmental policies.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
     

    • The Director of Nursing is responsible for the development, implementation and review of philosophy, goals and objectives, policies and procedures of the nursing department.  The Director of Nursing is responsible for defining the statement of purpose for nursing services and the description of nursing functions.
    • Develops and reviews a thorough orientation program for all nursing staff which includes general orientation, orientation specific to category of staff and an introduction to the home’s philosophies and objectives.
    • Responsible for screening of potential employees through the interview process and reference checks.
    • Completes staffing schedules and ascertains adequacy of staffing and plans effective use of staff.  Monitors staff levels on a daily basis.
    • Completes nursing staff performance appraisals at the end of probationary period, annually and as necessary.  Responsible for nursing staff discipline after consultation with the Administrator and/or Human Resources.
    • Responsible for pre-admission screening of residents via the Community Care Access Center, discharger planners, families, doctors and/or visitation and documentation of same.  Responsible for re-admission screening of hospitalized residents.
    • 7. Establishes and maintains a professional relationship with physicians and other health care professionals.  Maintains a liaison with the pharmacist.  The DON is responsible for ensuring compliance to the The Long Term Care Standards as it pertains to these professionals in conjunction with the Administrator.
    • 8. Ensures safekeeping and administration of medications, particularly narcotic/control drugs and is responsible for disposal of all medications as per Ministry regulations.
    • Via the RCC, is responsible for current medical records.  Responsible for retention of death/discharge files as per The Long Term Care Standards and destruction of medical records per policies and procedures.
    • Responsible for the development and maintenance of a Restorative Care Program which meets the needs of all residents.  Ensures that the program is evaluated routinely and revised as necessary.
    • Responsible for  adherence to nursing budget.
    • Participates actively in regular meetings with all categories of nursing personnel and other meetings as requested by administrator, (i.e. dietary, activities and housekeeping).
    • Completes regular rounds of the facility, paying particular attention to residents, their concerns, opinions and needs.  The D.O.N. in conjunction with the RCC ensures that resident care plans are adequate, individualized and current, through scheduled interdisciplinary conferences
    • Ensures that the components of the Quality Improvement Program for the nursing department are in place, adequate and being conducted.  Initiates necessary changes and follow through of concerns.
    • Maintains adequate nursing and continence supplies, equipment and government stock medications via inventory and ordering.  Ensures that all nursing equipment is safe, clean and in good repair.
    • Annually ensures that all registered staff have a current Certificate of Competence with the  College of Nurses of Ontario.
    • Ensures that staff development and continuing education of the nursing staff, meets their needs and the monthly requirements.
    • Provides necessary health teaching to residents on an on-going basis.
    • Monitors Continence Assessments and the effectiveness of the facility’s Skin Care Program.  Provides a monthly report to Head Office which includes Skin Monitoring, Continence Assessment and an Incident Audit Summary.
    • Monitors all Resident Incidents and ensures the timely notification of the Ministry of Health for all Unusual Occurrences.
    • Maintains good communication with Residents and their families and acts as their advocate as necessary.
    • Acts as or delegates someone as the Employee Health Nurse.


    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
     

    • May be responsible for administrative functions in the absence of the Administrator.
    • May participate in the planning, execution and evaluation of fire protection plan and/or may  co-ordinate with the facilities Health and Safety Committee.
    • May act as the Infection Control Officer for the facility.
    • In conjunction with the Administrator, is involved in Union/Management meetings.
    • Shares “on-call” responsibilities as necessary with other administrative personnel.
    • Participates and/or co-ordinates designated committees within the facility.
    • Promotes co-operation and co-ordination of services with community agencies and other health care providers. 
    • Initiates and facilitates all ADP assessments.

    • Post-RN education in gerontology or 3 years relevant experience in working with persons in Long Term Care.
    • Post-RN education in management or a minimum of 3 years relevant experience in management.

  • A Registered Nurse with a current Certificate of Competency from the College of Nurses of Ontario.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability with comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques as they relate to long term care.

      The Registered Practical Nurse, in the Nursing Home, shall focus on the delivery of health care in a safe environment for all the Residents.  Professional nursing care shall be provided, in accordance with the Ontario College of Nurses, and the facility guidelines, policies and procedures.  As a member of the Care Team, the Registered Practical Nurse, will also be responsible for completing assigned duties in support services for the Residents, e.g. laundry, meal service.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Registered Nurse is responsible to provide professional nursing care as required and to supervise the nursing care administered by those under his/her charge; in accordance with Ontario College of Nurses, facility and government guidelines.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
     

  • Actively involved in the implementation of governmental facility objectives, procedures and policies regarding nursing care.
  • Establishes a professional relationship with other departments subordinate personnel, as well as volunteers and families.
  • Assesses residents conditions and prepares and implements and appropriate plan of are.
  • Ensures that all resident related documentation (i.e. care plans, treatment sheets and MARS) is updated and current, and that nursing staff refer to it accordingly.
  • Organizes nursing staff to enable them to carry out resident care in an efficient, effective manner.
  • Monitor staff as required for punctuality and adherence to assigned breaks.
  • Assist with training of personnel as requested.
  • Provides necessary health teaching to residents on an on-going basis.
  • Reports on inappropriate and/or substandard nursing care immediately to the Director of Nursing for follow up.
  • Maintains accurate records at all times.
  • Observes and reports on residents conditions, ensuring that the Director of Nursing is aware of any ill or injured residents and significant change.
  • On week-ends and shift must be willing to accept responsibility of overseeing entire facility and responding to immediate concerns in absence of the administrative staff, i.e. immediate dietary concerns, equipment failure, replacement of ill/absent staff.
  • Understands and utilizes administrative “on call” system appropriately.
  • Responsible for the administration of resident medication, completion of prescribed treatments and documentation of same.
  • Completes resident incident reports or supervises completion of same as required.
  • Ensures that restorative care programs are implemented and completed according to resident needs.
  • Reports any nursing equipment in disrepair or storage of nursing supplies to the Director of Nursing. 
  • Recognizes safety hazards and the importance of providing a safe environment by following established policies and procedures and reporting hazardous situations.
  • Completes assessments and hourly checks on restrained residents and documents same.
  • Establishes a professional relationship with Attending Physicians and follows orders as prescribed. 
  • He/she accompanies the physicians on rounds and assists when necessary with diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
  • Supervises and monitors resident meals.
  • OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
     
  • May assist the Director of Nursing in the preparation of nursing staff performance appraisals.
  • May assist with in-service training as required.
